Some sorely needed competition for Canon, let’s hope
There’s no questioning the superiority of Canon’s full frame DSLR sensors over the competition – because there is none. You want full frame in a current model and there’s only one manufacturer offering a choice of two bodies – the 5D ($3k, give or take) and the 1Ds Mk II ($7k!).
So this rumor of a full frame DSLR from Sony is welcome news indeed. Having acquired Minolta, Sony has access to the full range of full frame lenses from that maker, a range with a great reputation. Rumored availability is 2008 – let’s hope that means 2008 not 2010 which seems to be the ever delayed date for Sigma’s much promised and yet to be delivered DP1 point-and-shoot. My hope is that the latter will be the Leica M2 for digital fans we are all waiting for.
Now if only Nikon, which also has a superb range of full frame lenses, would join the fray. Maybe we could see full frame bodies under $2k, which is where they should be.
