{"id":33905,"date":"2019-09-09T08:22:22","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T15:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pindelski.org\/Photography\/?p=33905"},"modified":"2019-09-09T08:24:51","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T15:24:51","slug":"the-young-girls-of-rochefort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pindelski.org\/Photography\/2019\/09\/09\/the-young-girls-of-rochefort\/","title":{"rendered":"The Young Girls of Rochefort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Eye candy.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Jacques D\u00e9my followed up his unique movie of 1964 <a href=http:\/\/pindelski.org\/Photography\/2019\/01\/29\/the-umbrellas-of-cherbourg\/ target=_blank>The Umbrellas of Cherbourg<\/a> with the no less enjoyable The Young Girls of Rochefort in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>Where the earlier musical is deeply dramatic under its layer of song, the later one is about nothing else but joy.  Joy in performance, joy in dance, joy in color and, most especially, joy in two of the most beautiful French women ever given us by the silver screen.<\/p>\n<p>Those two women are, again, Catherine Deneuve, and her biological sister Fran\u00e7ois Dorl\u00e9ac, who tragically died just a couple of years later in a car crash at an unfairly young 25.  Where Deneuve is all cool, remote beauty, Dorl\u00e9ac is warmth and charm and that indefinable something found only in the French.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some images from this very special piece of eye candy, from a magnificent BluRay restoration by Criterion:<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_01.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nDorl\u00e9ac is simply gorgeous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_02.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nGeorge Chakiris of West Side Story fame and Michel Piccoli are the male leads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_03.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nAt 45 minutes something magical happens.  Gene Kelly joins the cast.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_04.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nPastel colors throughout jump off the screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_05.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nIt does not get better than this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_06.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nThe dance scenes in the square are the most complex I have seen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_07.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nThe sisters put on a couple of drop dead performances.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_08.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nRenoir, anyone?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_09.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nDorl\u00e9ac&#8217;s pleated dress is to die for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_10.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nAs Dorl\u00e9ac tracks down Kelly who has found her lost music score,<br \/>\nMichel Legrand delivers a stunning piano concerto to complete the scene.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_11.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nA dream couple, and Kelly still very much has it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pindelski.org\/Blog2\/Rochefort_12.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"412\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nThe finale.  Everyone dances in the movie.<\/p>\n<p><\/i><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>If Hollywood can claim to do one thing better than any other it&#8217;s the musical.  D\u00e9my takes on the best and proves that he is fully up to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>There is no English version available, though it was allegedly made at the same time.
