53 images.

In 2003 Malibu photographer Robert Weingarten took a picture daily from his oceanside home toward Santa Monica Bay using a long lens and the same composition. The result is magical and if you thought Rothko could paint this is far better. Available very inexpensively – click the image – and exquisitely printed. 53 of his images are reproduced and you will not believe the variety.

Posh

Fancy.

Apocryphally the acronym POSH stood for ‘Port Out, Starboard Home’ which is how the rich chose their state rooms on the mighty Cunard transatlantic liners of the past. Those locations afforded the best views for arrival in Manhattan and when returning to Southampton.

In this case the reference is to overpriced luggage (known as “steamer trunks” back in the day) displayed in downtown San Francisco, of a type likely used by those passengers of the bygone era when travel was an adventure, the journey greater than the destination. And one in which the hoi polloi was mercifully hidden away below the water line in cattle class with no lifeboat access.

Coffee shop intellectuals

A sublime pleasure.

These two men are to be regularly found in my local coffee shop, frequented mostly by the older set. No hipsters, no Starbucks here. The one on the left is Hungarian and an architect, the other is his American client. The conversation ranges across literature, the arts, music and business, invariably returning to architecture. The exchanges are respectful, there are no interruptions and the discussions are on a high intellectual plane. Just a pleasure to watch …. and eavesdrop upon!
