The new AppleTV – Part III

Adding a DAC.

The new AppleTV lacks traditional coaxial analog connectors for sound output; it comes with an optical Toslink sound output socket only. So if you want to route the AppleTV’s sound output to external speakers via an analog external amplifier/receiver lacking a digital optical sound input, you need a Digital Analog Converter (DAC). Speakers (and amplifiers, for that matter) built into TV sets are generally poor quality so bypassing them and using external loudspeaker boxes connected to a receiver ensures better sound.

There are two versions of the DAC, depending whether your sound system is 2 speakers and an optional subwoofer (2.1) or four corner speakers, a center and a subwoofer (5.1).

My Sony receiver is not that old yet it lacks a Toslink connector for optical digital sound, meaning I had to interpose a DAC between the AppleTV and the Sony. Adding a new digital receiver makes no economic sense, so I bought a Gefen DAC. There are two models.

  • For 2.1 sound – use this one. $58 at the time of writing. This is the one I use.
  • For 5.1 sound – this one. $91.

I went with the Gefen – cheaper units are available – as research disclosed it was known to work with the AppleTV.

As the specifications are silent I also purchased a short Toslink optical fiber cable only to find that Gefen includes one in the box with the DAC! So save $6 and don’t buy a separate cable. Then I ran into a serious snag. I had never so much as seen a Toslink cable before and, no matter how I tried, I could not get the flimsy connector to stay in either the Gefen or AppleTV sockets. After a spot of head scratching and Googling, it transpired that the optical ends of the connector are covered with translucent rubber caps, circled in the above picture. Removing these allowed the connectors to fit at both ends. Duh! I knew that engineering degree would come in handy one day ….

After that it was plain sailing. I switched off the TV’s speakers, connected the AppleTV to the Gefen and routed my two RCA coaxial cables from the Gefen DAC to the Sony receiver. The DAC comes with a small power supply so you will have to search out yet another adapter to make it fit your already overburdened power strip. The red LED on the DAC confirms it’s getting power but in practice you will hide it out of the way.

The sound is excellent, the Sony receiver’s volume control is set at half way through the scale so clearly the amplifier is being adequately driven by the DAC and, equally importantly, not overdriven. The TV remains connected using an HDMI cable (for video) and the orange cable you can see connected to the AppleTV is for wired internet. I use wired in preference to wireless as the AppleTV sits right next to my broadband modem and I always prefer wired to wireless, having grown up in a world where men were men, cars had carburettors and the word ‘digital’ was not in common use. The small cable routed to the front bezel of the AppleTV is the optical sender from my IR blaster.

I have to add that until now I have always thought the USB connector to be one of the worst designed on the planet, and just slightly better than the Firewire800 one. Well, it must now take the runner’s up place to the Toslink one which, though keyed, is so small that you have to look awfully hard for the keyways, for some reason only fits one way (nonsensical for an optical signal) and will leave you scratching your head because of those little rubber covers about which the instructions are silent.

We now enjoy premium quality video and sound from the new AppleTV and greatly enjoy watching our photo slideshows with the help of this handy little device, as well as listening to our music and watching Netflix and iTunes movies.

The new AppleTV – Part II

Here I examine the working of AirPlay, Apple’s update to the use of remote sources and speakers for playing music files.

At this time AirPlay only works for routing sound files, but Steve Jobs has promised that routing of video files will be added before 2011. In Part I, I mentioned that optimal control of the infra red sensor in the AppleTV for use with remotes results from the use of an IR blaster. This small device replaces the AppleTV’s sensor with a much less directional and more sensitive one and works for all IR controlled devices. Simply stated, once you have an IR blaster installed you can pretty much point a remote in any direction and it will work the hardware it is aimed at, however imperfectly. Just ask our 8 year old. I use this one and it’s excellent.

The alternative is to load Remote (free, from the AppStore) on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and use the mobile device to control your AppleTV using wifi, provided you have a wireless network in your home. Thus approach does not require any line of sight to the device you want to control as it uses radio waves.

I downloaded the latest version of Remote and installed it on my iPhone and found that it was very quick to set up and easy to use. The screen shots which follow are from my 3G iPhone.

Fire up Remote and you are asked for the Library you want to use. Mine (“Tigger’s Library”) resides on the HackPro in my home office.

Checking that library as the source, the next two screens ask where you want the sound routed.

In the above, ‘Computer’ refers to the speakers connected to the HackPro. I simply chose ‘AppleTV’ and the music is routed to the speakers connected to our TV. Note the useful provision of a volume control in the second screen, above.

And that’s about it. It’s that simple. This approach allows centralized or distributed storage of music (and, soon, video) files which can now be output to any connected device on the network.

More use tests:

I have now watched several movies using AppleTV as the streaming device. Some were from Netflix, both in SD and HD, and some were purchased from the iTunes store $4.99 or less) also in SD and HD. At no time did any of these exhibit any stuttering or distortion in either video or sound and all loaded and started playing within 30 seconds or less. The AppleTV remains only barely warm to the touch, even after a two hour HD movie transmission and even a child could use the on screen menus. In fact Winston, our 8 year old boy, has proved that to be true. The appearance of the menus using Netflix is identical to that for the iTunes store.

Conclusion:

The AppleTV is unlikely to become the sole device for consuming sound and movies in the home, primarily owing to the dunderheads who run movie studios. They prefer to have a large slice of nothing in royalties than a small slice of something, having convinced themselves that the $0.99 cent pricing of songs in the iTunes Music Store has cheated them. Meanwhile, they conveniently avoid noticing that without iTMS music would be pretty much dead as no one wants to pay $10 for a CD which gathers dust in the home, is hard to access and contains many tracks you do not want. They are now making the same error with movies, on the principle that if your competitor’s candle dims, that brightens yours. I have never known that to be true in any field of human endeavor. You try and explain it to them.

After its previous failures with the AppleTV, Apple seems reluctant to even show the device on its web site and you have to search for the related home page, which can be found here. I can’t even find it on the specifications page, but the power consumption, even when working, does not exceed a couple of watts, which explains why there is no on/off switch.

However, as a device with a superb user interface which finally avoids the heat, poor performance and price issues of its predecessor, the AppleTV is going to find itself in a lot of Christmas stockings this December at the $99 asking price. I know I will be buying a half dozen or so with just that destination in mind.

In Part III I address the use of a Digital to Analog Converter to convert the AppleTV’s digital/optical sound output to analog for usew with traditional amplifiers and external speakers.

The new AppleTV – Part I

Some preliminary thoughts.

I wrote of the original AppleTV in these pages a few years back. After my first one blew, I ended up selling the second for this was a deeply flawed device. Its various purposes were to store data, relay data from other devices and allow purchase or rental of movies from the iTunes store. It did none of these well.

Data storage on the internal hard drive was very limited. Absent extensive hacking, external storage could not be added. I hacked mine and would lose the hacks with every OS upgrade.

The relaying of data was not great either. Even with 802.11n wireless, jittering of the movie sourced from your remote Mac was common owing to the pokey Intel CPU used.

And, finally, the iTunes movie library available for purchase or rent was not only very limited in scope, the format for purchased movies was the so-so ‘.mkv’ one, rather than something higher quality.

But the single worst feature, by far, of the original AppleTV was that it ran criminally hot. In his manic pursuit of a clean exterior, Steve Jobs had dispensed with fan cooling for the hot running CPU and hard drive, opting for conduction of heat through the device’s metal skirt. That would get so hot (on both the ones I owned) that you would not want your child close to the gadget. It also dramatically shortened life expectancy and reports of failure in well under two years were a dime a dozen. Design had truly ruled function.

So once I got rid of mine I gave the device no more thought. Movies are routed to our TV from a MacMini to which my file servers are attached, using VLC to play the movie. DVDs from Netflix are played through the MacMini. And pictures residing in iTunes on my Hackintosh are relayed to the TV via the MacMini and simple wireless networking. The movie files are uncompressed VOB format (4-5gB a movie) and there is no stuttering thanks to the competent Core2Duo CPU in the Mini, whose fan is cranked up to avoid the usual Mac overheating problems. I run it at 3,000 rpm minimum, compared to maybe 1,000 stock. A new fan is cheaper than a new MacMini. When I want to watch a streaming Netflix movie the MacMini is pointed to Netflix using Safari and off we go.

It all makes for a very reliable setup yet, when the new AppleTV was announced a few weeks ago, I took notice for one reason. It runs the same A4 CPU used in the iPad and that CPU is cooler than Steve McQueen.

The thinking underlying the new AppleTV has changed. There is no more internal storage (hooray for that) and there is still no fan. With the A4 CPU none is needed. The device is now solely a streaming connector for your data, whether stored on other home Macs or in the cloud, be the latter Netflix, iTunes, internet radio stations, etc. And the interface from the original AppleTV is retained and it is outstanding. Just point and click with a simple and elegant remote control.

I wrote about the elegant Apple Remote when reviewing Plex and it is a gorgeous design, even if the buttons could use greater spacing. The new AppleTV includes one and the now much smaller AppleTV (the size of a hockey puck) and Remote sell for just $99. Not much downside if you decide it’s not for you.

Some of the original limitations remain. Your movie files must be in a format AppleTV likes (.m4V, .mp4 and .mov) so you still cannot play your ripped VOB uncompressed DVD files unless you go through the time consuming (if easy) conversion process using an app like Handbrake (free download). Your rental movie choices are still limited to those in the iTunes library and you can no longer buy movies using the AppleTV, as it has no storage. And you cannot access the Internet to rent from Amazon’s Video on Demand service – I use the MacMini for that, with Safari.

But the added functionality makes it worthwhile for me. First, it runs super cool, even when taxed with streaming an HD movie. Setup is easy and you can use the built-in wireless internet connection or an ethernet cable. I prefer the latter as it’s simply more robust. And now you can get dozens of internet radio stations and, most importantly, Netflix, delivered in the usual Apple TV interface. Anyone who has used Netflix streaming through a browser on their TV knows just how poor that UI is, with very small text. I cannot make it out sitting 10 feet away from our 42″ TV. And while you can get the nice AppleTV interface on your MacMini using Frontrow, you cannot get Netflix or Internet radio that way. So just for Netflix alone, the AppleTV makes sense. I can easily read the clear text on the screen of our 720p LCD TV, a somewhat dated bottom-of-the-line Vizio from WalMart.

The Apple Remote:

Typifying Apple’s attention to ergonomic design, the Apple Remote supplied with the AppleTV is not the same as the one you can buy separately for $19, though either will work.

The raised directional buttons on the AppleTV version have a purpose. They permit instant tactile recognition of which is which if you have both, like I do. I use the regular one to control my MacMini. To preclude one remote speaking to both the AppleTV and the MacMini you have to pair each to its respective device. In the AppleTV that’s a simple menu option. For the MacMini you point the other remote at the Mini and hold the Menu and Right arrow buttons for a few seconds until you see the paired logo on the screen. Henceforth each remote will ‘speak’ to the related device only, so when you switch inputs between your AppleTV and the MacMini, you do not enter a chaotic screen resulting from all the instructions you sent to one device being ‘seen’ by the other.

These remotes are infra red, meaning line of sight is needed to your AppleTV if they are to work. You can greatly enhance their range and reduce their directionality by adding an IR blaster or, if you have an iPhone or an iPhone Touch, download the free Remote app which will make your handheld device into a wifi remote, no line of sight being involved.

Connectivity:

The changes here will likely affect how you connect the new AppleTV to your peripherals. Out of the box all you need do is add an HDMI cable, plug it into your modern TV and you have video and sound flawlessly relayed. Anything more than 720p on the TV is wasted as that’s the maximum definition supported by the AppleTV or, indeed, by iTunes or Netflix movies.

However, if like me you prefer better quality sound from your TV, you will want to use a separate amplifier/receiver and external speakers to get the best from the source material. With the old AppleTV you simply switched off the speakers in your TV and used RCA coaxial cables to route sound from the AppleTV to your amplifier to which you connected external speakers. The new AppleTV has no RCA connectors for analog sound, supporting digital sound output only through the single TOSlink optical digital connector – circled in the first picture above. If, as is my case, your external amplifier is older and does not have an optical digital input, you need to convert the optical digital sound output from the new AppleTV to analog, using a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). It’s cheaper than buying a new amplifier/receiver.

There are two approaches. If you use 2.1 sound (2 speakers and maybe a subwoofer) you need one of these, and a short TOSlink optical cable. The latter goes between the DAC and your AppleTV and the output of the DAC goes to your amplifier using standard analog RCA coaxial cables. If you use 5.1 surround sound, you need one of these. There are cheaper versions than these Gefen DACs but they have been extensively tested with the AppleTV are are known to work. In either case, your total investment is less than one old AppleTV.

At this time I’m using the (poor) internal speakers in our TV to test the new AppleTV while I await delivery of the Gefen DAC.

First impressions: Compared with its predecessor, the new AppleTV runs cool, is far more responsive to the remote, is overall faster, renders iTunes Store movies at a higher quality level and delivers Netflix streaming and a large selection of internet radio stations, neither available on the old version. Why, there’s even classical music for old goats like me. It is very easy to setup as a host for your pictures stored on your remote Mac and does a superb job of rendering slideshows on your TV screen.

More in Part II when I have the DAC installed for higher quality sound, and have stressed the device. Initial impressions, suffice it to say, are positive.

A front end for the home theater.

Much as I am trying to simplify life with one remote, and the L5 Remote for the iPhone makes a huge step forward in fulfilling that goal, I have long been experimenting with a like approach to consolidate the front end for use of my TV.

If, like me, you rip your DVDs to external hard disk drives, then I’m afraid AppleTV or a MacMini running FrontRow do not work. For whatever arcane licensing issues that are involved, neither technology supports the TS/VOB file format resident on a DVD and I’m not about to spend half of my remaining years converting all my movies to a format Apple’s software supports. Further, I like the idea of storing movies in their native format as everything else is a compromise and, who knows, one day maybe 100″ LCD screens will become affordable and that original format will look great, whereas an iPad/ATV version will not. Plus storage is cheap, so I’m not about to start compressing my movies to save on a few bytes of space.

Having tried various front end applications which attempt to deliver all your content through one common interface, I have returned to Plex, one of the few which is written specifically – and only – for the Mac. The app is free and I have it running on my MacMini, attached to the TV. Before explain what Plex can do it is important to point out that it cannot accept encrypted cable company feeds delivered through a set top box, meaning you still have to switch to that input to watch TV. Also, it cannot access the iTunes Store for purchase of movies though there is an app for the Amazon Video On Demand store which is in alpha release. I have tried it and it works well, so it’s a good workaround for those occasions you want to rent or buy a movie rather than wait for Netflix.

Plex’s appearance can be varied using any number of downloadable ‘skins’, and I have opted for the ‘Alaska’ variant in the following snap of the home screen (literally a screenshot as I cannot figure out how to do this otherwise, OS X’s screenshot capability being rendered inoperative by Plex, so pardon the mediocre quality):

While the L5 Remote folks figure out how to get the Apple Remote’s functions transferred to my iPhone (I have had no luck so far), I am using a downloaded Plex driver for the Apple remote (current aluminum model) which works well with the application. You can also use a wireless mouse which works even better, but neither approach obviates the need for yet one more control device.

My movies are all stored on a bunch of external servers and it is a moment’s work to tell Plex where to find these, using the built in Browse function. Thereafter, Plex can be asked to download movie cover art and synopses, which takes about thirty minutes per hundred movies and is about 80% correct – I had to manually change the remaining 20% as Plex looked up the wrong data. It’s a function of how accurately your movies are named, Plex suggesting that you shoud append the movie’s date in parenteses in the title. The approach I adopted is faster – download and fix the bad ones.

Click and hold the Menu button on the Apple Remote and you have the option of looking at the synopsis:

Movie quality delivered by Plex from locally stored movies is identical to the usual way of playing the movie in VLC or your app of choice.

Go to Pictures on the Home page and there are several photoblog apps from well known photographers and news media, downloadable through the Plex App Store, all waiting to be displayed in glorious color on your big screen TV:

What’s so exciting about this product is that all content – movies, iTunes, iPhoto, photoblogs, etc. – is delivered through a common interface which is both very responsive and needs the simplest of remotes. The Apple Remote runs all of $19. If you don’t like the look of the interface there are lots of choices out there, including one which emulates AppleTV/Frontrow. I don’t much care for that one but you can almost certainly find something that works.

If you use a Mac to deliver content from multiple local and remote sources to your TV I recommend you take a hard look at Plex. The price is right, as in ‘free’. If your friends use Plex you can even access their libraries using Plex media Server though I have not yet tried that. The next thing I need to do is send a donation to the hard working programming team at Plex, which proves the power of distributed programming, if any proof were needed.

Update on the Apple Remote:

This is a quite extraordinary feat of industrial design. While the down button is too close to the Menu and Pause buttons for those with large hands, the amazing thing about this device is that there is not a seam in sight, the only openings being the battery cover (CR2023) and the plastic cover for the IR emitter. It reminds me of Dr. Who’s spaceship the Tardis, which is famously bigger on the inside than on the outside! How did they get the components in there?

With the downloadable Plex driver the Apple Remote works beautifully with Plex but it argues with my core principle which is to have one remote do everything. So I tried programming the L5 Remote using the Apple Remote but so far without luck. Then it struck me that a Rube Goldberg approach might work so I programmed my RCA Universal Remote in ‘learning’ mode using the Apple Remote, then used the RCA to ‘teach’ the L5 Remote. Success!

I have corresponded with the L5 Remote folks on this (they stated that they have no such problem with the earlier white plastic Apple Remote) and they are looking into the issue once they have their hands on the new aluminum Apple Remote. Clearly it’s unrealistic to expect them to have tried each of the thousands of remotes out there, but the Apple Remote is a special case owing to its likely ownership by a significant percentage of Mac users. I’ll provide details when I have them and meanwhile want to add that my enthusiasm for the L5 Remote remains undimmed, especially given how responsive the manufacturer has been.

Life with Mahler

Life without him is not living.

How can anyone live without Mahler? Standing at the cusp between the classical romanticism of Tchaikovsky and Schubert and the atonality of Stravinsky and Berg, he changed music as we know it. Whether through his beautiful songs or his massive symphonies, one’s understanding and appreciation of nature is raised an order of magnitude through listening to his works.

Absent a few documentaries, the only dramatic movie of Mahler’s life is the one made in 1974 by Ken Russell, much of it filmed in the Lake District of England, as the production budget was tiny and the crew could scare afford to decamp to the Tyrol for the right scenery. Proving again that money and results are frequently poorly correlated in movie making, Russell does a masterful job, with his usual obsessions and eccentricities thrown in.

In addition to dramatic intensity, the movie has some exceptional photography, a few frames of which I excerpt below. My original was a VHS copy which was pretty bad, though it was in widescreen. Now I have tracked down an ex-rental DVD which is a little better, though unfortunately in 4:3 format. One day someone will remaster this long forgotten out-of-print work and put it on BluRay with proper formatting. Meanwhile, the second rate DVD is all I have, so excuse the poor quality of what follows.

Mahler is acted by Robert Powell, every bit as special here as in Zefirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth. He gives it his all, never overacting.

The movie opens with some extraordinary imagery. After we see his lakeside hut explode in flames the director cuts to Mahler’s wife, Alma, trying to escape from a cocoon – the allegory being how his genius stifled her far from trivial musical talents.

The narrative takes place on a train where Alma tries to decide, over the course of the journey, whether to leave Mahler for a dashing soldier. Needless to add, Russell cannot resist a funny dig at Visconti’s Death in Venice, with this scene glimpsed on the train platform:

But if I have one favorite moment from this orgy of imagery served up by Russell, it is the scene where Mahler threatens to dunk Alma in the lake from the same little hut which explodes in flames at the start of the movie. Set to the concluding bars of the first movement of the Sixth Symphony, you have to be clinically dead if the hairs on your back do not rise at this lush combination of sound and picture:

A few years back I loaded up the CD player in my car with all of Mahler’s symphonies and drove up the coast highway of California from San Diego to the Oregon border, then inland across Death Valley listening to nothing else. If you want to appreciate what music tells you about nature, I recommend a like course of action.

It’s been said that the Austrians’ greatest genius was to convince the world that Hitler was a German and Beethoven an Austrian. There is no need for such posturing here, for Mahler was quite simply the greatest musical creation of a nation which gave us anti-semitism, an anti-semitism which he took on and conquered in his all too brief life. The movie is highly recommended. I confess that parts of the Second Symphony are dancing in my brain as I type ….

Update may 24, 2023:

Well, it’s finally here. I just watched a Japanese remastering of Mahler on the big screen. No more scratchy VHS definition. No more castrated 4:3 format. In glorious 16:9 widescreen BluRay quality. Thank you, Japan, and I’m still wiping the tears from my face. A glorious piece of movie making.
