Dali

Trust me, it’s an original.

At Fishermen’s Wharf, SF.

It’s fitting that the great fake DalI should see his mostly faked works in tourist traps preying on the unsuspecting. At last count his global output must exceed some 5 million pieces. One productive chap, our Salvador.

Snapped on the D700 with the 28mm f/2 pre-Ai Nikkor at Fisherman’s Wharf, SF.

Smiling boat

Smile.

Nikon D700, 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor

A friend named this the ‘smiling boat’ and I confess I did not see the effect until she pointed it out.

At the San Francisco National Historic Maritime National Park, Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco. Note the Art Deco touches in the fluted extrusions of the boat.

The lens used, the old Sonnar type 105mm pre-Ai Nikkor with 5 elements in 3 groups, a masterpiece of the lensmaker’s art, truly speaks to me. Very reminsicent in rendering to the 90mm Leitz Elmarit of like vintage, and not one I will easily part with. You really should operate the aperture ring on this to understand what I am talking about, and the optics match the mechanics in quality.

Strike

Lone protester.

At the Argonaut Hotel, Fisherman’s Wharf, SF.

A striking worker looks one as his plutocratic master glides by in a limousine. The web site for the hotel could hardly be more pretentious, opening thus:

“With a name like the Argonaut, it’s impossible not to speak of this hotel in grand, almost legendary terms. Inspired by the Greek legend and Gold Rush-era adventurers, it’s one of those rare places in San Francisco that truly merits a term like iconic. Located in the historic Haslett Warehouse, the Argonaut’s home is a grand building built in 1907 of exposed brick, Douglas Fir beams and so much seaside character, you feel as though you can almost reach out and touch the colorful Barbary Coast past here.”

Grand, legendary, rare, iconic, colorful.

Uh huh.

No wonder they are striking.
